HOKO - Vineyard Bonsai Culture

...ROOTS

WHO WE ARE

The roots of this project are Joana Santiago and Ivo Santos. Joana Santiago , a viticulturist and wine producer at Quinta de Santiago, and Ivo Santos , a bonsai master, art educator, and founder of Bonsaiteca. Their passion for nature, wine, the inspiring art form of bonsai, and their fascination with Japanese culture led to the desire to give new life to what was once waste—vineyard winter pruning sticks and used or discarded corks.

Living Nature

We respect natural cycles and transform waste into new forms of life.

Wine & Bonsai

We combine the Alvarinho tradition and Bonsai art in a unique and conscious experience.

Circularity

We produce with care, reuse materials and give new life to what seemed lost.

MANIFEST

At Hoko, we believe that living slowly is a journey to a simpler, more conscious life. At Hoko, we advance at the pace of nature. We create, innovate, cultivate, and recreate, respecting the timing of things and giving them new life. We combine natural wine and bonsai to create an experience of rediscovering the simple things in life, like learning how to care for a bonsai vine or enjoying a glass of wine—pleasures that encourage greater presence in the present moment.

THE CYCLE

OF OUR BONSAIS

The Vine

Our bonsai trees are grown from Alvarinho vines, grown at Quinta de Santiago in Monção. Each plant carries the essence of the terroir and identity of the vineyard from which it originates, reflecting tradition and care.

Winter Pruning

During winter pruning, we carefully select the canes that would otherwise be discarded to burn or incorporate into the soil. These canes gain new life when they are rooted in small pots, cared for, and treated, to later be transformed into small bonsai trees, extending the vine's natural life cycle into a new product.

The Art of Bonsai

Each plant is then potted and shaped by hand, following the Japanese philosophy of patience, attention to detail, and connection with nature. The result is a unique plant that grows slowly and inspires contemplation.

Sustainability

The transformation of pruning sticks into bonsai reflects Hoko's commitment to the circular economy. Each bonsai symbolizes conscious reuse and appreciation for what would otherwise be waste.
